The Civil War of 1936-1939 brought the greatest disaster in the
history of Corbera: during the Battle of the Ebro, the village was in
the vanguard of the republican front established in August 1938 on
the outskirts of La Pobla de Massaluca, Vilalba and Gandesa. The front
crumbled in Corbera on September 3rd and the village was left
practically in ruins. The damage of the old quarter forced the
villagers to move downhill.
So the abandoned ruins became the symbol of the villagers defence in
the most tragic event in recent history, and a place to be visited by
anyone wanting to recall those terrible actions, or merely to
contemplate the disasters of war.
